Message Board Chronicles

First thing this AM the Messenger windows started popping up on the taskbar, all the inboxes were full and even got a couple phone calls about the Message Board not working.

Turns out Proboards had a major meltdown and lost all ther servers and we may not be back up for days. To read the whole story try: http://support.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=status&action=display&thread=244738 Anyhow, we dove in head first and threw together a backup board to do us till the main board is back up and running. Check it out at: http://members7.boardhost.com/maritimeracers/index.html

One of the test pics I posted on the backup message board was this Top Sportsman VW I saw on an English website. Now I'm obsessed with the damn thing - It's all I can do to keep from coming up with another "hare-brained" scheme involving a 2 door Golf and some old parts. Let me see now.... I've got a posi Jeep rearend that could use a set of Moser axles, a big old FE Ford, headers, and........  See what I mean?

On a more serious note MDP has been rained out and has rescheduled the points meet for the saturday of the 2nd meet. Last spring they lost so many events it was hard to keep track of it. Even Greenfield Dragway lost one day already this season. Three weeks to the season opener at CB Dragway so they may escape the monsoon season. Rumour has it they will be doing something this season to improve the traction. If they want to attract a "Quick 8" field it had better be right.

More of the same..............

Biggest news first: Miramichi Dragway Park's first points meet and Maritime Stock/Super Stock series event scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled due to a wet forecast.

As for me I finished up most of the work at home and started another big project helping Brother in law Ross build a workshop/shed at his place. Gonna be nice - 14X18 with clerestory windows and a small loft on the back end. Spent the day putting the sills together with half lap joints and getting it all level and square. Rest of the floor will be done tomorrow maybe.

Picked up a Mig welder at Canadian Tire in North Sydney today. They had it on sale at $175 off so I couldn't pass it up. Looks like there's no excuse now for not finishing the Hornet's cage. As you can see all that's holding it in place now is some red Tuck tape, an interference fit on the crossbar and the force of gravity on the door bar. There's also a small tack with a stick welder where the main hoop mounts on top of the subframe connectors. but maybe now with a new welder there'll finally be some progress on the old girl. Long term plans are to build a "tribute" car similar to the Maskin and Kanners Hornet X Pro Stocker from  1977. It was either that or the Wally booth car from the same era and since I think the paint scheme on Dick Maskin's car would be easier to reproduce that made the decision easier. Still got to move the leaf springs and do something with the wheel tubs but the layout of the Hornet's subframe/rear hatch area makes it easy. There's no weird bends or curves and even the stock tubs are shaped almost like aftermarket ones. Will post pics as I go but first thing is to fix a couple of small holes in the long term VW Golf project's floor just to get used to the welder.

Busy at home

Just spent 2 days doing over the upstairs floor and since it wasn't drag race related or even mildy interesting I'll spare everyone the details. Needless to say I didn't have much time to spend on the computer for the past couple of days. For the rest of the week I'll be working on the VWs. Got one to restore, one to maintain and one for parts. Could always use another 2 door Golf though......

Next on the calendar is Miramichi Dragway Park's 1st Points Meet May 30-31 and June1. Depending on which weather forecast you look at it could be either cloudy and warm or sunny and cool. Didn't see any mention of rain in anyone's forecast.

Sunday Sunday Sunday!!!

A gorgeous Sunday AM in the Maritimes - Greenfield Dragway is starting day two of their season opener, The Friends of RWP are busy tending to PEI's crown jewel,  reconstruction is in full swing at Miramichi, the IHRA is in Milan, Michigan, and all the NHRA stars are partying with NASCAR at Charlotte. Bruton Smith fought the politicians and the NIMBYs and plunked a world class dragstrip right in the heart of NASCAR country. Maybe we can convert a few of of those stock car boys one day...........

Coughlin, Neff win first drag race in Charlotte

5/24/2008

Reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock world champion Jeg Coughlin and rookie of the year candidate Mike Neff beat 14-time world champ John Force and 2008 Pro Stock Motorcycle titlist Matt Smith in the first drag race down zMax Dragway @ Concord, site of the inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals.

Driving identical Volvo dump trucks down a dirt strip in the middle of a construction site might not sound as exciting as a real drag race, but for Coughlin, the thrill was there. "This facility is going to be first-rate," he said during a tour of the track, which will host the Sept. 11-14 event. "It's certainly got Bruton's trademark signatures. It's an awesome-looking track, and I think racing in the heart of NASCAR country is going to be huge.
"I can't wait to get there, and I guess 'Zippy' and I already have a win under our belts after today, so we're undefeated here."

And what am I doing you ask? I'm into day two of tearing up vinyl flooring and getting ready for tile. The highlight of my day will likely be the 600 miles at Charlotte tonight. If it's anything like last night's Busch(sorry - I meant Nationwide) race it should be interesting to say the least.

Spring cleaning..........

Been moving some files around in the computers as a sort of cyber spring cleaning session and found a few gems. Spending so much time on drag racing websites has given me an overload of 1969 Camaros and late model Mustangs and all the other "popular" drag cars lately to last me a lifetime. Also I'm not a fan of hood scoops unless the vehicle left the factory with one. So I'll try to give you an idea of what makes my mouth water. Every time I come across one of these rare Stock or Superstock combinations I tend to save a pic of it somewhere. So I'll upload a few of my favourites tonight for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!!

Yard work sucks.........

Spent the whole day mowing and digging and planting and raking and doing yard work in general. I spent a total of maybe 15 minutes online over 2 sessions today. Once was to post a link to an IHRA rules page I made this morning and the second time was to post this. The only Drag Racing news today is that both the PEI and Miramichi tracks are busy installing new concrete pads. Never had too much time to hunt down any other info.

Greenfield Dragway Season Opener goes this weekend. What a success story this track has become since it started. Every year both their car numbers and the amount of spectators increase and every year they do something to improve the facility or the Association. If you haven't made the trek to Greenfield yet you've been missing out on an adventure.

Another window - Another VW

Got the last piece of glass fitted to our latest window this AM. Now comes the fun part - wrapping all the edges(evenly) with copper foil and laying on many feet of solder and some means of hanging the thing. The dark part is like car window tint - hold it up to the light and you can see right through it. Those are horseshoe nails driven into the plywood all around the perimeter. The flat sides of the nails makes it easy to hold it in tension while you grind and fit the parts.

Friend of mine gave me another parts VW today for free - it runs and drives fine and he even drove it the few kms from his place to my Dad's garage. While it's not exactly like the two I already have - It's a 1991 Jetta similar to this one only it's brown. While it's a 4 door the front clip and almost everything else will still fit a 2 door VW Golf 1986-92. That'll supply most of the parts needed for my current VW Project - a 1990 Golf almost identical to the one I've been driving forever except for the body colour and as you can see that's even close. Even though one is a 1990 and the other one is a 1991 they're still only a couple of hundred serial numbers apart. I bought the 1990 for a parts car but it was in too good shape to scrap. I had to "borrow" the front clip a year ago when a big SUV ran over the left front corner of the one I'm driving now. With the aluminum wheels from the Jetta and some GTI parts it might be a neat little car. With the price of fuel these days this might just be my most sensible project yet.

Sometimes you have good days........

Sun was shining, birds were chirping and it was nice out most of the day. Got a whole bunch of stuff done including this new banner for eastcoastperformance.ca on our home page. Luc and Angela have increased their financial support of this site for 2008 and we're glad to have them back for another season. We'd also like to welcome Once Again Sports on board. We'll soon have their banner up and running too.

Been working like a madman on more stained glass panels. We made one for Wayne and Michelle's new house and now everyone else in the family wants one too. That's cool since these windows will likely be around many years and will hopefully become family heirlooms. We must be getting better at it since they just keep getting more elaborate all the time. This is the last one we finished for Nancy and Al's living room. It is 20"X32" with 85 pieces and who knows how many feet of solder. It's not quite as much fun as building a drag car but I still enjoy doing it. A lot cheaper too - I'd love to be able to build a car with materials that cost less than $10 per square foot LOL.

I'm itching to get started on some graphics for that Quick 8 event at Cape Breton Dragway. It's all I can do to stay away my graphics software until I get FINAL confirmation on this blockbuster event. PLEASE someone/anyone from the CBDRA - give me a green light so we can start promoting the crap out of this thing.

Quick 8 is coming!!

Today I spent quite a few hours with an extremely dedicated bunch of Racers who are determined to bring a Quick 8 program to Cape Breton Dragway.

Looks like the August race would be the best date. IMO that is going to be one tough race to qualify for. Just in Cape Breton alone there's enough dragsters and door cars to make for a wild event. If there's any racers from the rest of the Maritimes that want to make the field they're going to have to bring some pretty big guns. If this event goes off it will pack the place with spectators providing it is promoted right. Just think of it - blowers, alcohol, C-14, nitrous, megacubes, half track burnouts, parachutes and lots of noise.

Hopefully Cape Breton Dragway will be ready and by that I mean the absolute best traction possible on the best surface possible(no bumps or dips). If the rest of the CBDRA members are as serious as the guys that I talked to today there may be hope after all.

Saturday update(?)

Not a whole lot of news to report today. As of 9:00 PM there's no news from MDP or RWP on the Message Board.

I'm just sitting here watching the NASCAR All-Star race on SPEED. Had a little visit with the Bras d'Or bunch this afternoon and discussed the current state of the sport in Cape Breton and we have come to the conclusion that there are a  LOT of fast cars just in Cape Breton. We also discussed the condition(?) of the track and the amount of traction there'll be there this season. Many racers have picked up a lot more power over the winter and none of them want to be spinning their tires over the bumps(long story - don't ask)
